Our story

The "Social Carrot" idea was conceived after a summer camp I, Vinay Natarajan attended where a team of students worked on a project to develop a cheap and reliable method to deliver insulin in economically disadvantaged parts of the world.

The summer camp and travels to parts of the world where there were disadvantaged people without access to good health and sanitation prompted us to start "Social carrot". We wanted to make a difference in these communities even if it was a small contribution.

During a visit to Kanyakumari in India, we noticed stunning landscapes and monuments filled with litter. The natural beauty of this town was overshadowed by the discarded trash and unsanitary conditions.

We wondered why the district was in the state it was in and found out that the town struggled with limited resources and inadequate infrastructure to maintain proper sanitation levels. We decided that it would not be enough to solely rely on the local governmental agencies to address these underlying problems.

So, from that moment our idea was born to involve and inspire local schools, colleges, private businesses and other volunteer agencies to participate in clean up drives to make their local surroundings cleaner.

We also have held health screening camps to detect early onset of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. We plan to host 1 or 2 camps every year.

Our plan is to organize, coordinate and fund these clean up drives and health camps. We are hopeful that our story will inspire the local communities to join us in our mission.

Fund raising

We started off by funding the events and supplies on our own.

For the more recent events, we have received help from friends, families and extended friend networks to help us buy cleaning supplies, provide transportation and food, and source medical gear and medical supplies.

We plan to self fund and use platforms like GoFundMe to continue to organize these events.

We also plan to sell T-Shirts and other Social Carrot merchandise in the future to fund our mission. All proceeds from the sale of these merchandise will be used to fund our events.
